Collection mostly contains ephemera and photographs from Dr. Kurz's tenure at FSCW/FSU. A newspaper clipping from the Chicago Sunday Tribune titled "Retiring plant authority once Chicago barber" (May, 6, 1956), is included. Students and faculty included in photos are Ruth Schornherst, Helen Tew, Marjorie Terrill, Catherine Davis, Dorothy Crownson, Dr. William J. G. Land (from the University of Chicago), William Hugh Stickler, Rollin Stevens, Mary Hood, Betty Linthicum, Ezda Deviney, Henry Stevenson, Betty Barker, Olivia Embry, Florence Evers, Rose Kurz, Marlene Schwab, Hazel Sangster, Grace Madsen and Roland McMillan Harper. Most photos were taken during botany field trips, visiting areas such as Natural Bridge and Lake Iamonia in Florida. There are also a few photos of the FSCW baseball team.

According to Robin Sellers' Femina Perfecta, in 1914 members of the even-year classes of Florida State College for Women (juniors and freshmen) wore their green and yellow class colors to chapel on the Saturday morning before Thanksgiving. Dr. Herman Kurz was born in Iowa in 1886. He entered the University of Chicago in 1916 as a freshman at age 30 and received a BS degree in Botany. He also completed his M.S and Ph.D. degree at that institution in 1921 and 1922, respectively. In 1922, he came to the Florida State College for Women as Assistant Professor of Botany. The Florida State College for Women (FSCW) Artist Series began in 1923. Dean Ella Opperman was the first person in charge of organizing the series. The series was intended to bring renowned artists to FSCW. After FSCW became Florida State University (FSU), the FSU School of Music managed the series. Most of the records in the collection pertain to the $400,000 raised by the American Baptist Education Society in 1889-1890 in order to obtain a 600,000 grant from John D. Rockefeller for the creation of an endowment for the University of Chicago.
